Sample
10 websites built by ESTREIA, 8 of which for portuguese SME of various sectors (2 online shops + websites for services), 1 NGO website and 1 EU website.
8 websites hosted in Portugal on PTisp/Equinix, and 2 in France on Siteground.
Sites: Online
Websites were available during the blackout, but received mostly international visits. They could have been a source of information during the emergency, but the lack of communications limited the updating and consultation in Portugal.
-55% of Visits
On April 28, in comparison with other Mondays. Drops between 5% and 92%, per website.
-58% of Goals
On April, 28, in comparison with other Mondays. Drops between 35% and 100%, per website.
Comms: Offline
The negative impacts on websites were mostly due to the rapid collapse of communications, particularly mobile networks. It became clear that operators must increase the autonomy of their infrastructures, especially antennas.
Conclusions
Websites were available, but the lack of communications limited their use as channels between companies and users during an emergency.
For many hours, customers were unable to update them, and users were unable to access them in Portugal (and Spain). Hence many people were limited to radio for information.
It has become clear that it is important to improve the requirements that operators have to meet, so that infrastructure such as antennas, for example, continue to function during a blackout.
